Inspirational book: Spraycan art by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff

“Hi everyone, and welcome to Lauryn Draws! My name’s Laura, and I’m so excited to share my love for drawing and creativity with you. Today, I want to take you back to a time when I was obsessed with designing murals and discovering the world of spraycan art. Let me tell you about how it all started and a special book that changed everything for me.”

“As a teenager, I was fascinated by big, bold designs. I spent hours sketching murals in my notebooks, inspired by the vibrant world of spraycan art. A major source of inspiration for me was this incredible book, gifted to me by my best friend, Dany. She and I shared a deep passion for street art, and this book became our guide and treasure.

Printed in 1987 and later reprinted, the book is a collection of photographs of artworks captured around the world during the early days of street art. It explores the origins of the movement in America, showcasing pieces from neighborhoods like the Bronx, Manhattan, Chicago, and Los Angeles. But it doesn’t stop there; it also highlights the growing influence of street art in European cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Paris.

What’s fascinating is how each city brought its own flair to the art. The styles varied widely, yet there was this unifying spirit—a desire to astonish and create something entirely new. It was more than just art; it was a movement, a way of expressing words and ideas through powerful, bold lettering that became as much a part of the message as the content itself.

For me, flipping through those pages was like stepping into a different world. Dany and I would spend hours analyzing the details, dreaming of creating something just as impactful. Even though my murals stayed on paper, those experiences shaped the way I approach creativity and design today.”

“In a future video, I’ll dive into different mural styles and techniques, including how to adapt spraycan art ideas to smaller surfaces like paper or digital platforms. There’s so much to explore, and I can’t wait to share it with you.”

“Do you have a similar story? Or maybe you’ve worked on murals or experimented with spraycan art? I’d love to hear about your experiences and tips in the comments. Sharing ideas is such a great way to learn together.”
